Works offered to an average of 2.51 Crore persons per day in May 2020 under MNREGS misleads us

Now, on 08 JUN 2020, PIB (Press Information Bureau, i.e. Government’s Scribe) released a note with a Headline, “Highest ever allocation of Rs. 1,01,500 crore made under Mahatma Gandhi NREGS during financial year 2020-2021; a sum of Rs. 31,493 crore has already been released

The note includes,

Work has been offered to 6.69 crore persons so far in this financial year

Average number of persons to whom work offered in May 2020 is 2.51 crore per day

Total 10 lakh works have been completed so far during 2020-2021

Focus is on works related to water conservation and irrigation, plantation, horticulture and Individual Beneficiary works for livelihood promotion

Read between the lines

In the entire financial year MNREGA’s office discloses the work has been provided to 78881292 (around 78 million) people with a total of 2653338715 persondays which can be averaged out to be 2.21 crore works every month to thses people.

This implies 33 days of work provided to each person in the same financial year.

Figures also shows an average of 2.51 lacs persons were offered with the work each day in the financial year 2019-20 relative to which though claimed to be 2.51 crores in the month of May this year appears far from truth.

reports shows, It took 12 months to offer jobs to 93 million people in the financial year 2019-20 relative to which in the current financial year PIB claims to a total of 69 million persons has already offered the works till the month of May with a whopping Average number of persons to whom work offered in May 2020 is 2.51 crore per day.

Even if we consider the figure of 2.51 Cr works were mistakenly interchanged with that of Persondays then also we discrepancies arises.

It is 2653338715 persondays were claimed to be offered in the financial year 2019-20 which come out to be around 72.6 lacs of persondays per day and to compare it with the numbers (i.e. 2.51 Cr) in May 2020 it turn out to be more three and a half times higher for the Month of May 2020 as opposed to what PIB claimed it to be 73% higher.

MNREGA’s official web portal displays a table wherein it is clearly mentioned under Employment Generated during the year 2019-2020 that number of persons to whom employment had offered were 9.30 Cr persons which can in no way compared with that of 2.51 Crores per day.

“Average number of persons to whom work offered in May 2020 has been 2.51 crore per day, which is 73% higher than the work offered in May last year, which was 1.45 crore persons per day” PIB publishes.

1.45 crore persons were offered with the work per day is also not true as it is 2653338715 persondays (72.69 lacs per day) of work which MNREGA’s office displayed over their portal
